Is it DIVIDE & CONQUER for India again?

‘Tricolored’ India? What‘s the real story?

Last week, the Government of India released a list of states and districts in the country that are categorized as RED, ORANGE and GREEN zones. The list consisted of 733 zones that the country has been divided into. To curb the spread of the novel Coronavirus, these zones have been divided on the basis of the restrictions imposed on their activities. The zones distinguish between the relaxation allowed on the mobility of goods and people within the zones.

The Magnified Picture

To grab a deeper insight into this information, I have created a very simple visualization of the different states of India and how they’re affected now. Using a dataset available on Kaggle and the information provided by The Economic Times, I have done a preliminary EDA of the data using MS-Excel and R Console only.

State-wise comparison of affected, recovered and dead COVID-19 patients

This plot consists of the states and union territories that have been affected by COVID-19. It gives a comparative overview of how the various states have been able to cope up with the virus. Notably,

  • The yellow region signifies the people affected, green stands for recovered and red stands for the people who have died.
  • States like Gujarat, Chattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and New Delhi have a fairly large percentage of patients that are yet to recover.
  • Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra have the maximum ratio of death to affected cases.
  • Residents of Goa, Arunachal Pradesh, and Manipur seem to be successful in their preventive measures. Not only have they brought an equal ratio between the affected cases and the recovered patients, but they also have fewer death cases.
  • The above-illustrated plot gives you a rough idea as to how deeply a state is submerged under the iceberg of the pandemic.
  • Ever bar on the states categorizes the state into the three zones it has been divided into. In total, there are 130 red zones, 284 orange zones, and 319 green zones.
  • The restrictions imposed and relaxations allowed by the Government of India are distinctively variant amongst the three zones.
Summary of the affected cases in India

A short summarization of the data through R shows how diversely the states of India are affected. While some states have only one positive case, a few have as high as 10,000 cases.

Most of us are trying our best to cope up with it in our own spheres within the reach of individual horizons. The governments are doing their best and organizations worldwide are fighting tooth and nail to relieve the people, businesses, services, and all entities that are affected. Let’s ensure individual safety for our response towards collective responsibility.

This story is a capture of the various electronic media reports and the analysis generated from the data available. The sole purpose of this story is to educate the reader of the global findings and statistics. Under no circumstances does it intend to disregard or credit any entity in the negative light.

Thank you for reading through. I hope you and your kith and kin are safe and stay safe until we win over the pandemic. Till then, let us all keep an eye on the happenings worldwide and prepare for the worst.
